A hike to a 10,000-foot summit in the Pinaleno Mountains. The trails in the Pinaleno Mountains offer high, cool hikes, a welcome escape from the furnace-like desert below. Snow lingers into May and sometimes returns in October. Access to this hike is provided by the Swift Trail. This amazing road, now paved for most of its length, climbs the north slopes of the range, crosses Ladybug Pass, then traverses high on the south slopes. Numerous trails start from the Swift Trail and its spur roads, and descend the mountain to trailheads in the foothills. These hikes are long, strenuous, and rewarding. The fir forests of the Pinaleno Mountains are home to the endangered red squirrel. Controversy continues over the ongoing development of an astronomical observatory on Mount Graham, the highest peak in the range.
