This is a hike through cool pine-fir forest to the edge of the Wilderness of Rocks in the Santa Catalina Mountains and the Pusch Ridge Wilderness. This cool, shady ravine is densely forested with ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, and quaking aspen. At the head of the gulch, the trail emerges onto broad pine-covered Marshall Saddle. Turn left here, at 1.2 miles, onto the Aspen Trail, which climbs gradually as it heads south along the east slopes of Marshall Peak. At 1.7 miles, the trail passes through a broad saddle and turns more easterly. You can leave the trail here and follow an informal trail southwest to a rocky viewpoint overlooking the Wilderness of Rocks, named for its granite outcrops.
