A fascinating hike to the top of Picacho Peak. Rising 1,500 vertical feet above the surrounding desert floor, 3,374-foot Picacho Peak is an isolated 22-million-year-old volcanic mountain situated midway between the Gila River and Tucson. This is the site of Arizona’s only Civil War battle. The “Battle of Picacho Pass” took place on April 15, 1862, lasted about an hour and a half, and cost the lives of four “Johnny Rebs” and three “Yanks.” Petroglyphs abound in the area, testifying that the prehistoric Hohokam were here long before the white man.
