This trail loops through the western Goldfield Mountains northeast of Mesa. It offers a fine sense of remoteness, considering its location near the greater Phoenix area. At 2.3 miles, a fence marks the boundary of the Tonto National Forest, and the trail climbs gradually around the north side of the mountain. As it crosses a ridge, the remainder of the Goldfield Mountains becomes visible to the northeast, and beyond, the distinctive summits of Four Peaks. Continuing to climb, the trail turns south into a canyon, and climbs to a pass. This spot is the high point of the hike. With the bulk of Pass Mountain hiding the metropolitan area to the southwest, this saddle is a wild and rugged spot.
