This hike follows the old Apache Railroad grade through the scenic high country of the White Mountains. The trail is open to hikers, horses, and bicycles but closed to motor vehicles. Follow the old railroad grade north as it cuts through the rolling alpine meadow northwest of Big Lake. This high plateau is formed from basalt lava flows, and the volcanic origins of the White Mountains are evidenced by the cinders underfoot. All of the hills and mountains in this area are old volcanoes.
