This hike takes you up popular, scenic Peralta Canyon and returns cross-country via scenic Barks Canyon. Start the loop on the well-graded Peralta Trail, which heads northwest up Peralta Canyon, climbing steadily. The trail generally stays near the bed of the canyon, occasionally crossing it. Numerous stone pinnacles, known locally as “stone ghosts,” are scattered along the canyon and its rims. The pinnacles are mostly carved from rhyolite, a volcanic rock. The mountains eroded along cracks in the rock, carving out odd-looking fins and pinnacles. The trail steepens somewhat near the head of the canyon, and a few short switchbacks lead to Fremont Saddle at the head of Peralta Canyon.
