This is a backpack into a little-visited canyon with a trout stream coursing through it. This backpack is an 8.4-mile hike upstream to Chevelon Canyon Lake, a man-made reservoir. There is no formal trail, but fisherman, day hikers, and wildlife have made paths that follow the course of the creek. A few stream crossings are necessary, so this hike would not be possible during periods of high water. The easy route passes beaver ponds, swimming holes, and grassy campsites amid ponderosa pine, Fremont cottonwood, New Mexican locust, and other riparian species. Be wary of poison ivy. Elk and mule deer are common, and at night it’s not unusual to hear a beaver slapping its tail on the water.
