This is a popular summer hike along Wet Beaver Creek in the Wet Beaver Wilderness. The trail climbs to the Mogollon Rim for some good views. The trail stays along the north side of Wet Beaver Creek. Stands of Fremont cottonwood and other riparian vegetation crowd the creek, but there are several short side trails down to the water. One of several permanent streams flowing through the canyons below the Mogollon Rim, Wet Beaver Creek is very popular during the summer. As you continue up the canyon, notice how the slope to the left, which is sunnier and drier, features a nearly pure stand of juniper trees. On the other hand, the slope to the right faces north and is cooler and moister; it supports a mixed stand of juniper and pinyon. Evidently the pinyon pines require just a bit more moisture, and possibly cooler temperatures, than the junipers. Very slight changes in climate can have a dramatic effect on plant and animal communities.
