This hike in the Munds Mountain Wilderness takes you up a historic road, and offers excellent views of Mitten Ridge, Bear Wallow Canyon, Munds Mountain, and Sedona. This is the old Schnebly Hill Road, which was originally built as a wagon road from Sedona to the Mogollon Rim and on to Flagstaff. It is now closed to motorized vehicles and makes a fine hiking trail with a panoramic view. Because of the west-facing slope, the dominant vegetation is chaparral brush. Near the top, there is a dense stand of Gambel oak, a small, slender deciduous tree about 20 to 30 feet high. Gambel oaks often favor the slopes just below escarpments or rims. Permit: Red Rock Pass required for parking.
