This hike is a great alternative to the crowded West Fork Trail, and is right across the highway. There are excellent views of the West Fork of Oak Creek and of Oak Creek Canyon itself. Like most of the old trails in Oak Creek Canyon, this trail is not shown on the topographic map. The trail climbs south through shady ponderosa pine–Gambel oak forest, and then turns a corner onto a much drier south-facing slope. Here, because of the increased temperature and evaporation, the chaparral plants dominate: scrub oak, mountain mahogany, and manzanita. There are fine views down the canyon to the flat-topped mesa of Wilson Mountain.
