A short hike to a lake in a volcanic crater near the San Francisco Peaks. Walker Lake is fullest in late spring after a snowy winter. In late summer it is little more than a marsh. Considering how porous this volcanic area is, it's surprising that the runoff from the small watershed formed by the crater is enough to form even a small pond. It is worthwhile to walk around the lake. A man-caused forest fire burned the now-barren north slope of the crater. The fire started near the lake, and high winds swept it up over the rim, where it traveled another 5 miles before being contained by firefighters. A larger fire in 1996 burned much of the area again. The views of Humphreys Peak, the highest of the San Francisco Peaks, are great from the northwest side of the lake, and even better if you climb up the slope through the old burn.
