The elephant tree is one of Anza-Borrego’s most unusual indigenous plants. The Elephant Trees Discovery Trail winds through a small group of these trees and calls attention to about 20 other plants native to the low, hot, alluvial fan environment. Numbered posts along the trail are keyed to a leaflet available at the trailhead. The elephant tree is truly a botanical oddity. With a short, stubby trunk, puffy limbs, reddish twigs and sap, tiny green leaves, and purplish fruit, it is right at home with the weird types of vegetation found in Baja’s central deserts. Like cacti and succulents, the elephant tree is able to store water internally.
