This hidden grotto and 30-foot waterfall lie within Cleveland National Forest, just outside the west boundary of Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. They’re part of a remote and roadless area once known as the Sill Hill Wilderness Study Area. Although the area never won official wilderness designation—in part because of its relatively small size—hikers will find little evidence of human influence, past or present, here. Finding the waterfall may be challenging, as the informal path down to it is sketchy. The last few hundred yards involve a bit of rock-hopping and possibly bushwhacking. In addition, you must take care not to enter an island of private land lying between the national forest and the state park.
