In the heat of summer, the La Jolla Indian Reservation draws plenty of visitors to its campground and water slide. On the hottest days, “tubing” down the lazily flowing San Luis Rey River on giant inner tubes is popular as well. If it’s peaceful and quiet hiking you’re looking for, though, you’d best come during late fall through early spring, when the place is practically deserted. Day-use and camping fees are charged here—and no pets are allowed in the campground or on the trails. The best hiking is downstream from the campground. The river there is graced with a dense riparian strip of willows, sycamores, cottonwoods, and live oaks nourished by steady releases of water from Lake Henshaw.
