From its outlet at Mission Bay, Rose Canyon extends north past the east brow of Soledad Mountain, and it curves east toward the flat mesas of the Miramar air station. About 200,000 people unwittingly follow part of its course every day: Interstate 5 parallels the lower canyon’s stream channel for about 3 miles, and the Santa Fe tracks (the main rail link to Los Angeles) stick with it for more than 6 miles. The City of San Diego has declared the most picturesque and undisturbed section of Rose Canyon an open space. Lying only a scant mile from the Golden Triangle’s high-rises and traffic snarls, the park offers up a fine, smooth pathway that is perfect for walking, jogging, or lazy mountain biking. Except for the Coaster commuter trains gliding through every now and again, the canyon resonates more with the sounds of woodpeckers, meadowlarks, and crickets than with the din of auto traffic.
