The Highland Valley Trail runs parallel to Highland Valley Road on oak-dotted slopes overlooking the shallow (and sometimes dry), easternmost arm of Lake Hodges. It presently ends after more than 2 miles at the edge of Sycamore Creek Road—though a future south extension may tie into Poway’s community trail system. You can spend an easy-going couple of hours rambling out and back along this trail, alternately in warm sunshine amid the chaparral or in cool dampness beneath the overspreading live oaks. In early spring, the Highland Valley Trail appears at its freshest, with radiant greenery covering everything on the ground except for the thick brown accumulations of oak-leaf litter.
