South of the wide La Jolla Shores Beach, the sand disappears and wave-washed cliffs begin. Just offshore, a major submarine canyon, La Jolla Canyon, swallows the sand that normally would migrate down the coast. This is the main reason why sandy beaches are the exception rather than the rule from La Jolla to Pacific Beach. La Jolla lies on a step-like terrace at the foot of Soledad Mountain, an uplifted block of erosion-resistant sandstone. The precipitous north flank of this terrace faces the usually calm and deep waters of La Jolla Bay. Here, wave action from infrequent storms has gouged out a series of sea grottos, known as the La Jolla Caves.
