Three Lakes lie at the northwest tip of Bucks Lake Wilderness, with one uninspiring, artificial lake outside the wilderness boundary and two more natural, picturesque lakes within the wilderness. Few hikers take the 5.3-mile route to the uppermost lakes, which offers solitude and serenity to those up to the task. Overnighters will find campsites to be few and far between, but they seem to be more than adequate for the small amount of campers. Head west from the trailhead and immediately hop over Mill Creek before turning north to follow gently graded trail through a light forest of white firs and lodgepole pines to a boulder hop over the creek. The tread briefly disappears in a small, grassy meadow on the far side but is easily found again just past a snow survey marker, where the trail reenters forest cover. Leaving Mill Creek, the lupine-lined trail begins a moderate climb through shady forest with occasional pockets of meadow carpeted with grasses, sedges, shrubs, and wildflowers in early to midseason.
