Named for the last survivor of the Yahi Yani tribe, the Ishi Wilderness is a remote foothills community of deep canyons and dark volcanic rock. Hiking the Mill Creek Trail through Ishi Wilderness requires a high level of commitment, as just getting to the trailhead requires a multihour drive, a good portion of which is on a rough dirt road built as a fire break by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The low elevation ensures snow-free hiking throughout most of the year, and a springtime trip offers the added bonus of a fine wildflower display. Kayakers and anglers are drawn to this section of creek for river running and excellent catch-and-release fishing. A few cautions are worth noting: At this elevation, poison oak is prevalent, rattlesnakes inhabit the canyon, and ticks can be bothersome, especially in spring.
