Forest-rimmed Jakey Lake is definitely off the beaten path and, despite the trip’s short distance, there’s a high probability of finding solitude. Walk 50 yards northwest from the trailhead to a junction with a trail on the left to Horseshoe Lake. Veer right (north) and climb moderately through Lassen’s predominant forest type, composed of red firs, Western white pines, and lodgepole pines, along with an understory primarily of pinemat manzanita. After a half-mile, viewless climb to a crest, drop north a short distance to a rumpled bench and head north to a brink, where you have tree-filtered views of Prospect Peak, Cinder Cone, Fantastic Lava Beds, and Snag Lake. This is followed by a half-mile, knee-knocking descent that may be marked with lingering snow.
