There are two chief attractions of a hike from the Cone Lake Trailhead into the northern part of Caribou Wilderness: easy hiking and scenic lakes. Backpackers searching for a short and gently graded walk to good campsites will not be disappointed with this 2-mile hike to Triangle Lake, which has minimal elevation gain They may, however, may be disappointed with the mosquitoes, which can be problematic until midsummer. Begin climbing mildly south on the Cone Lake Trail through a scattered forest of lodgepole pines, Jeffrey pines, and white firs, with clumps of manzanita and currant sprinkled across the forest floor. At the 0.75-mile mark, step into the signed Caribou Wilderness and continue the ascent for another mile to a junction near the north shore of Triangle Lake, which is irregularly shaped but bears little resemblance to its geometric namesake.
