Pioneer Basin, holding a string of lakes surrounded by flower-dotted alpine meadows and ringed by gray granite peaks, is one of the most scenic spots in the central Sierra. From the basin, visitors have sweeping views across the deep cleft of Mono Creek into the Mono Recesses and to high peaks along the Mono Divide. Backpackers will also get to sample a stretch of forested Mono Creek, an ascent up the lush canyon of Hopkins Creek, and picturesque Big McGee Lake along this semi-loop. This rugged route utilizes two difficult, cross-country crossings of the Sierra Crest: Stanford Col, above Steelhead Lake on the way into the basin, and Hopkins Pass, above Big McGee Lake, on the return to the McGee Creek Trail.
