The preserve is part of the old William Pfeffer Ranch, later owned by Fremont Older, a noted San Francisco newspaper editor, and his wife Cora Bagley Older. In the 1920s Mrs. Older designed their ranch home, known as “Woodhills,” with a flat roof and many pergolas, a departure from the prevailing style of the times. The house, in a state of disrepair when the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District acquired the ranch in 1975, was restored by a leaseholder and is now listed in the National Registry of Historic Places. Woodhills is open for occasional house tours. Meanwhile, 739 acres of the ranchlands are open to hikers, equestrians, and bicyclists, who can take the old ranch roads that wind across the rolling hayfields to old orchards and climb its long central ridge. The preserve is heavily used by equestrians from nearby stables and by bicyclists who enjoy the challenge of its many hill climbs. Trails leading to streets in neighboring subdivisions have no designated parking areas. This trail guide includes the following trails: Coyote Ridge Trail to Stevens Creek County Park, Loop Trip South to Maisie’s Park, Hunters Point, and Seven Springs Trail.
