Thornewood Preserve came to the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District as a gift. The property, now 109 acres, was developed by Julian and Edna Thorne in the 1920s,and was adjacent to the much larger August Schilling estate. Both properties were part of the Mexican Rancho CaƱada de Raimundo, which was purchased by lumberman Dennis Martin in 1846.
