Before the coming of white settlers, the Pulgas Redwoods covered most of the mountainside of present-day Wunderlich Park. During the 1850s and 60s these forests, part of the Rancho Cañada de Raimundo, were heavily logged for building and re-building San Francisco. After the timber was cut, some of the lower hills were cleared for farming, but on the steeper mountainsides redwoods began to grow again. The upper reaches of Wunderlich Park extend along the Skyline ridge at an elevation of about 2200 feet. East of the ridge the hillside falls away steeply, and the slope then flattens somewhat at a large meadow halfway down the mountainside. From this meadow smaller ridges and ravines descend to the lower park boundary along Woodside Road, making a total elevation change of nearly 1800 feet. Alambique Creek runs diagonally across the park, fed by streams in the precipitous wooded ravines to the north. This trail guide includes the following trails: Figure-Eight Loop Trip to Skyline Ridge from Park Office, Loop Trip to “The Meadows”, Circle Trip to “The Crossroads” from the Skyline Entrance, A Short Loop Trip in the Lower Park to Salamander and Redwood Flats.
