A day hike or overnight backpack trip to Marlette Lake in the Carson Range. The North Canyon Trail generally follows North Canyon Creek for about 5 miles to Marlette Lake, a human-made reservoir. There is designated camping near the turnoff to 9,214-foot Snow Valley Peak, 4 miles from the trailhead. Marlette Lake was constructed as the centerpiece of the elaborate water system supplying 25,000 to 40,000 people at Virginia City and Carson City. The chimney standing on the southeastern shore of the lake was once part of the watermaster’s house, occupied until the late 1950s. The dam was originally built in 1873 to aid in fluming wood to Spooner Summit and then on to Carson City. It has since undergone several reconstructions and is now 52 feet high.
