Gem Lake, if you’ll pardon the pun, is a jewel. Located on the eastern edge of Rocky Mountain National Park, this trailhead is one of the closest to the town of Estes Park. To begin this hike, leave your car and walk to the trailhead and signs that mark the beginning of the Gem Lake Trail. Gem Lake’s lower elevation in relation to the rest of Rocky Mountain National Park, along with the hike’s southern exposure, make this a great year-round hike. Estes Park is home to retirees, families, and other outdoors enthusiasts, so both the very old and very young frequent this trail.
