The Vedauwoo (VAY-duh-voo) area,“land of the earth-born spirit” in the Arapaho dialect, is a wonderful array of stunning granite formations that both intrigue the eye and beckon the body to try a bit of rock scrambling. This 7,600- acre oasis sits on the Wyoming high plains at an elevation of 8,000 feet. Ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, and aspen trees add to Vedauwoo’s natural beauty. The aspen trees offer a golden delight in the early autumn. The area is home to small mammals, deer, antelope, and domestic cattle. The winds seem to always blow, sculpting the land and giving soaring rides to the native raptors that nest in many hideaways among the rock pinnacles. This is a good destination for all seasons: spring, summer, and fall hiking, rock climbing, and camping—both in established and at primitive sites. In winter, you can enjoy crosscountry skiing and snowshoeing. The dramatic landscape invites the casual and professional photographer in every season, and extraordinary views of granite spires and domes provide unique photo opportunities. Vedauwoo is a favorite destination for rock climbers, who can be seen clinging to the rock like colorful spiders. The Turtle Rock Loop is suitable for families with young children, and there are four restrooms near the trail.
