The Rabbit Mountain area was tropical lowland covered by rivers, swamps, and lagoons 140 million years ago. Dinosaurs and other reptiles wandered through the lush vegetation. In more recent history, American Indians lived in this area for at least 5,000 years. Eventually, battles were lost and treaties were signed and broken, and the Arapaho and Cheyenne were permanently removed from their lands by 1867; today their descendants live on reservations in Wyoming and Oklahoma.
