North Table Mountain is a mesa formed by Paleocene basaltic lava flows about 60 million years ago. The more popular North Table Mountain and South Table Mountain, also a mesa, are separated by Clear Creek Canyon. Jefferson County Open Space has constructed a trail system to explore the mesa with expansive views of Golden and Denver from its top. North Table Mountain Park encompasses 1,998 acres, and a couple of areas are closed to the public, one of them a sensitive lichen area. Other seasonal closures protect cliff-nesting birds, mule deer, and other fragile or unique vegetation. The numerous mountain bikers we encountered were friendly and courteous, not at all a negative impact on the hiking experience. These trails are good for spring or fall days. Shade is scarce; on summer days it’s best to hike or bike early or late in the day to avoid the worst of the heat. Don’t forget your sunscreen, and take plenty of water.
