The Kannah Creek trail plunges from the rim of what the Forest Service says is the world’s largest flat-topped mountain and laps through a litany of Colorado’s ecosystems and life zones, passing through high-elevation wetlands and meadows and groves of spruce, fir, aspen, ponderosa, juniper, gamble oak and shrub, while crossing small streams and paralleling a major creek. The Grand Mesa’s cliffs are sliced by waterfalls that are visible from the trail. The rich wildlife habitats on the mesa harbor deer, elk, and even moose; if you see one of the broad-antlered beasts give it a wide berth as the half-ton creatures can be ill-tempered.While hiking this gem of a trail remember that similar terrain to the north has been leased for oil and gas development. Stay alert for mountain bikes.
