High in the mountains between Vail and Copper Mountain is the Vail Pass Recreation Area, 50,000 acres of some of the most beautiful land in the state. This trail takes us through the Camp Hale Basin, home in 1942 to some 11,000 soldiers who were training to fight effectively in the European mountain ranges during World War II. From the open basin, the route climbs into mixed forest, through open meadows, and up to the Jackal Hut, with some of the best views this side of the Mississippi. The Collegiate Peaks, Mount Elbert, Mount Massive, Mount of the Holy Cross, the Gore Range, and the Tenmile-Mosquito Ranges all vie for attention on this hike. This wide trail leads to a short wooden bridge over the Eagle River. The river crossing is marked by blue diamonds posted throughout the loop so we don’t get hopelessly lost. At 0.45 mile, turn right onto the wide, multiuse trail (East Fork Road) leading to the far eastern edge of this huge basin. On sunny weekend days during the winter, this area gets crowded; snowmobiles are all over the place, and you might even see an occasional dogsled cruising around.
