It is difficult to find many areas around Telluride that are not breathtaking and the Jud Wiebe Trail is certainly no exception. This quaint village sits in the valley of some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in Colorado, and is a perfect place to rendezvous for some great hiking. Settled as a gold-mining town in the late 1800s, Telluride quickly gained notoriety as a rowdy town with a boisterous population, like Butch Cassidy and other hooligans. Its reputation was so sketchy that train conductors would announce “to-hell-you-ride” when they arrived, and local legend has it that the town was named after this foreboding welcome. This hike, however, boasts just how gorgeous Telluride is by swiftly climbing above the town for soaring views of the area, and just as abruptly travels clear of civilization into rugged wilderness in the direction of the upper reaches of the massive Sneffels Range. A peaceful ascent near the end of the hike reveals dynamite looks at this area’s signature eastern mountains and the breathtaking 365-foot Bridal Veil Falls.
