Only 30 miles from Denver, Golden Gate Canyon State Park offers 14,000 acres of conifer forest, rocky peaks, mountain splendor, and aspen-filled meadows. Several ponds offer good trout fishing. There are twelve trails in the park, each named for an animal and marked with the animal’s footprint. The shape of the marker indicates the difficulty of the trail: Circles denote easy trails, squares are moderate, and diamonds mark the difficult trails. Trailheads with parking areas are easily accessible from the main roads in the park. Golden Gate Canyon State Park takes its name from Golden Gate City, once located at the mouth of Tucker Gulch, which led to the gold fields of Black Hawk and Central City. The two former mining towns, now popular as limited-stakes gambling destinations, are 6 miles south of the park on C–119. Despite the coming of gambling casinos, these towns continue to offer a glimpse of life in Colorado’s early days.
