This open-space park possesses a unique variety of ecological, geological, and scenic features. Geological forces together with erosion formed Bear Creek canyon, and nearly 1.5 miles of Bear Creek lie within the park. The riparian zone along the creek hosts a diversity of plant and animal species. The park is inhabited or visited by deer, elk, small mammals, and birds, as well as by reptiles, amphibians, and waterfowl. Anglers can try their luck with several species, including rainbow and brown trout. Dippers are rather remarkable in that they actually walk along the bottom of the stream, seemingly oblivious to the current, as they feed on insect larvae. On a fine weekend afternoon, the park is filled with families, children, and pets. The trail described here is upstream along Bear Creek’s northern bank. Climbing Bruin Bluff on the south side of the creek is not recommended, because the top of the bluff is narrow and gravelly, with a sheer drop-off of several hundred feet on one side.
