Matthews-Winters Park is located at a major entrance to the Rocky Mountains. The park lies astride the entrance to Mount Vernon canyon, which was one of the early routes to the gold fields of Central City and Fairplay in South Park. Dr. Joseph Casto, a lay preacher and land promoter who came from Ohio to make his fortune during the gold rush, founded the town of Mount Vernon in 1859. Although the Mount Vernon route was in continuous use, the town lost out in the struggle to survive as a city. Today the features that attracted settlers to this spot are still evident to the park visitor. The Dakota Hogback forms a low, rounded barrier between the prairie and the foothills. The park offers a variety of trails. Some climb west up the slopes of the first row of peaks and offer sweeping vistas of the plains beyond the Hogback. In a narrow valley Mount Vernon Creek winds its way through clumps of willows, chokecherries, and wild plums. The walk described here—a loop not usually frequented by bikers—takes you through the old Mount Vernon town site.
