Crown Hill Lake Open Space Park is located on the boundary between Wheat Ridge and Lakewood. It was created in 1979, through the joint efforts of Jefferson County and the cities of Wheat Ridge and Lakewood. The northwest corner of the park is set aside as a wildlife sanctuary, dedicated a national urban wildlife refuge by the National Urban Institute on Earth Day 1991. The 177-acre park has been kept in a natural state, with minimal development and an emphasis on preserving habitat for wildlife. The sanctuary and the lake are home to a variety of wildlife, including numerous species of waterfowl and shorebirds as well as foxes and even deer. Approximately 6.5 miles of trails are available. The primary trail is a paved walkway around the lake. An outer loop trail follows the park perimeter, but it’s rather noisy since it runs along West Thirty-second Avenue and Kipling Street, both busy thoroughfares.
