This lovely grassland area in the northwestern suburbs features sweeping views of the mountains and a unique bald eagle sanctuary, operated by Jefferson County Open Space, in the northwest corner of the park. Although there are eagle viewing areas, the sanctuary is not open to the public. A pair of bald eagles built a nest in 1992 in the stand of cottonwoods in this area. The pair has returned annually to breed. Despite its 3,000-acre size, the Standley Lake Park is considered “urban” for bald eagles. However, the plentiful fish in the lake and the park’s many prairie dog colonies offer the birds a sustaining habitat.
