This is a lovely 3,000-acre grassland area in the northwestern suburbs, with sweeping views to the Flatirons and Longs Peak to the northwest. Although many reservoirs in the Denver area are surrounded by marinas, parking lots, and mowed expanses of grass, Standley Lake is a notable exception. The park is preserved as a natural prairie that stretches for 2 miles on both north and south lakeshores and acts as a buffer between homes and the lake. On a blustery day, the shore is reminiscent of the Maine coast. The wind sweeps down from the mountains and whips the lake into whitecaps, while screaming gulls soar on the air currents or swoop down to fish. The reservoir is the water source for the cities of Westminster, Northglenn, and Thornton, so neither you nor your pet can swim here. The lake is used for boating and fishing and is stocked with trout, bass, catfish, and perch. Two gazebo-like structures with picnic tables are perched on the upper trail and offer panoramic views.
