At roughly 2,500 acres, Bear Creek Lake Park is the city of Lakewood’s largest park. It’s open year-round and, in addition to trails around the reservoir and along Bear Creek, offers fishing, boating, camping, boat rentals, a water ski school, and equestrian and biking trails. With its diversity of habitats, the park features a wide variety of plant and wildlife species, making a walk here particularly interesting. Besides the commonly found prairie dogs, deer, and coyotes, Bear Creek Lake Park has also attracted occasional elk, mountain lions, and migrating bald eagles. The park has 5.5 miles of paved trails and 15 miles of soft-surface trails. The walk described here is a shady, pleasant jaunt along Bear Creek and through stands of tall cottonwoods and thick underbrush watered by the stream. Part of the walk follows a fitness trail that leads to a large parking lot overlooking Bear Creek Lake.
