The Sand Creek Greenway became a reality when the Stapleton airport was relocated to Denver International Airport northeast of Denver, because Sand Creek flows through the formerly restricted airport property. In the late 1990s a portion of the greeenway was completed from the edge of the Stapleton property southeast along the creek to Bluff Lake. The reclamation was funded with monies from the Colorado Lottery. Eventually Sand Creek Park will be constructed at Havana Street and Twenty-Sixth Avenue, and a series of pedestrian bridges will connect it to the Sand Creek Greenway Trail. The construction will connect this portion of the trail with the section east of Chambers Road at Star K Ranch Open Space. The Urban Farm Facility, which you’ll drive by on Smith Road, provides programs for at-risk inner-city children, who participate in farm-based activities and learn about the environment and agriculture. A pavilion and rest rooms are located at a high point at Bluff Lake, on Havana Street 0.6 mile south from its intersection with Smith Road. Bluff Lake lies east of the pavilion in a low-lying, marshy gulch. A wide, crushed-gravel trail descends from the pavilion to the lake.
