From Cuernavaca Park west of Union Station in LoDo and north to where the Platte receives the waters of Clear Creek, the river and the greenway trail pass through a heavily industrialized area that includes stockyards, a municipal sewage treatment plant, a Public Service plant, and a refinery. The junction of the South Platte and Clear Creek is near I–76 and 0.5 mile from I–270, so this is a rather noisy area. On July 5, 1820, Maj. Stephen Long’s expedition camped here. This is also the spot where, in 1832, Fort Convenience—the first trading post north of the Arkansas River—was built on the east bank of the Platte opposite the mouth of Clear Creek. The banks are low and gentle in this area, with numerous sandbars in the river that connect to an occasional sandy beach. This area was once the agricultural center for Denver. Today there are still some small farms—one right along the trail farther downstream. The greenway is completed up to McKay Road. Land along the river is being acquired under an ambitious plan adopted in 1997 by Adams County; eventually the greenway trail will run uninterrupted to Brighton. Construction of the greenway north of McKay Road began in 2000.
