The South Platte River hasn’t been dammed yet, and it’s a brisk, fast flowing river as it heads downstream to the Chatfield Reservoir and Dam. The low rumble of the current is audible as the trail leads from the parking lot to a narrow pathway that follows the easterly bank of the river. Stands of towering cottonwoods block out the sky, while box elders and willows form dense underbrush. Occasionally the river spills out into an oxbow with shallow banks and quiet pools of water, which your pet will welcome. Because the path is narrow, leads through thick underbrush, and has two steep sections, it’s a moderately difficult walk.
