The Discovery Pavilion and the ponds and wetlands immediately to the north are the result of a partnership led by the Lockheed Martin Astronautics Foundation, public agencies, and private citizens, including 300 volunteers who planted hundreds of trees and shrubs in the area around the pavilion in the spring of 1996. Standing on the banks of one of the ponds and surveying the dozen acres of adjacent marshland with its active bird life, it’s hard to imagine that westward and behind a hill, vehicles are being assembled that boost spacecraft to other planets. Lockheed Martin has built rockets for the Viking, Voyager, Magellan, Galileo, and Pathfinder space probes. The wetland area is administered by Chatfield State Park.
