The Discovery Pavilion was dedicated in August 1997 and is said to be the only spot in the country where three major recreational trails converge: the Colorado Trail, the High Line Canal Trail, and the Platte River Greenway Trail. The Colorado Trail begins across Waterton Road and is served by a second parking lot immediately south of the Discovery Pavilion. No pets are allowed in Waterton Canyon due to efforts to protect a herd of bighorn sheep. The Colorado Trail is at Waterton Road. The High Line Canal is not accessible to the public in the canyon. The Discovery Pavilion marks the start of the Platte River Greenway Trail, although there are no mile markers or directional signs for the greenway trail. The trail runs along South Wadsworth Boulevard and approximately 0.5 mile west of the river itself. Interpretive signs at the rotunda outside the pavilion describe the three trails.
