If you’re looking for solitude, great views, bird life, and a glimpse of what this area looked like at the beginning of the twentieth century, you’ll find them here. The canal begins nearly 2 miles up the canyon to the west. A diversion dam on the South Platte River funnels water into a 600-foot-long tunnel. Take note of your surroundings: This is one of the last fragments of tallgrass prairie along the Front Range. Distant stands of native scrub oak and thick willow groves near the water provide wildlife habitat and shelter for deer, foxes, skunks, coyotes, rabbits, and numerous raptors, including eagles.
