Red Elephant Hill and Empire Loop have, for many years, played a secondary role to the better-known Bill Moore Lake Trail. Few people know how to find the start of Red Elephant Hill or the Empire Hilton cabin. Nonetheless, the trails provide an excellent 4-wheel-drive experience, dishing out plenty of challenge and great scenery. The trails are adopted by Patrol #9 of the Mile High Jeep Club but see little traffic. The first half of Red Elephant Hill is narrow, steep and tippy in places. Empire Loop is steep and rocky where it descends towards Mill Creek. Rocks on Empire Loop are a bit larger than those on Red Elephant Hill, but neither trail has any major obstacles. Some aggressive stock SUVs can do it, but modified vehicles will have an easier time.
