You’ll climb steeply out of Alice to high views of St. Mary’s Glacier. Side trip to top of Yankee Hill is steep and rough. Consider alternate approach to trail via Cumberland Gulch or add it as an extra loop. Trail ends at popular gambling towns, Central City and Blackhawk. Several interesting cemeteries west of Central City. To bypass Central City, follow easy York Gulch Road south from Waypoint 07 to reconnect with Fall River Road. If you are starting the trail from Central City, see reverse directions next page. Good area for ATVs, but you must park on forest roads not town streets. ATVs should consider entering via Cumberland Gulch Road 271.1. If camping, consider starting at other end from Columbine Campground and entering area via F.S. 739.1 (see map). Rocky and steep in places on the western half. Eastern half is rough in spots but easy. Side roads can be difficult. Roads are poorly marked and route-finding is challenging. A GPS unit and good topographic map are extremely helpful on this trail.
