This trail is truly an outstanding SUV adventure. It offers stunning scenery, rich mining history with many well-preserved structures, bubbling brooks, abundant wildflowers, beaver ponds, shaded camp spots, hiking and mountain biking trails, and many legal side roads for ATVs and Jeeps. As you pass Cinnamon Gulch, you can’t miss the picturesque mines on the hillside. The road to the mines looks intimidating, but it is only moderately challenging in good weather. The highest point of the trail at Horseshoe Basin is above 12,000 feet, so expect snow to linger here well into July. The lower part of the trail would be open earlier. Although the trail is mostly easy, it is not boring. There is just enough variety to make the drive fun. Optional upper end of trail, at Horseshoe Basin, is narrower and rougher, but most high-clearance SUVs should have no problem. Optional side trip up Cinnamon Gulch is manageable to mine at Waypoint 6, but is very rocky above the mine.
