This walk provides a glimpse into Central City’s mining days, passing stately Victorian homes, old storefronts and elaborate facades pasted onto today’s stores and casinos, and the tailings and crumbling headframes of old mines. The town has a lovely ambience, especially off-season when fewer tourists and gamblers walk its streets. In summer, come prepared for traffic congestion and parking problems. There is virtually no free parking in the area. The walk follows sidewalks and the sides of narrow roads; both are sometimes in disrepair. Central City sits at a lofty 8,560 feet above sea level, so take your time if you are unaccustomed to higher elevations. Special attractions: Central City Opera House, the Teller House, Central City National Historic District, Gilpin County Historical Society Museum, historic buildings and homes, casino gambling, and scenic views.
